Get Yer Snap Took

I'm still trying to work out what exactly this blog is going to be about. I'm leaning towards keeping it random and undefined. I figure I'll have some good stories about some Newfoundland culture I've learned and adapted to in my 2+ years here (holy crap, it's been that long!?) I also thought I could post some of my latest photography efforts. And I'm sure I'll have some more amusing tidbits from the children I work with! I'll try and keep things interesting!

On a note of Newfoundland culture, mixed with a little photography, here it goes!

I was recently on a trip to Dominican Republic to celebrate my cousin, Kim's wedding. A few days before leaving, my Uncle Beaver asked if I would mind assisting him with the photography on the big day (btw, his company's name is bigdayfoto: www.bigdayfoto.com) I spent the day following around the groom and his men, followed by the bride and her maids while they got ready for the... 'BIG DAY', followed by the big day itself. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. A few of my shots even made the album which my uncle compiled: www.bigdayfoto.com/blog/2011/04/dominican/ I can't recall all the photos that I took - but I certainly recognize a few. There are a couple pictures that my uncle is in - I definitely took those! AND I was given the responsability of taking the pictures of the shoes and the rings. The picture of the blue shoes with the rings hanging on the shoe strap? All. me. Please take a look! My uncle is an excellent photographer and I consider myself so lucky to be able to learn from him!

How does that tie in with Newfoundland culture? Well I guess that particular story doesn't... but the note of photography reminded me of the saying "Get yer snap took", which is how Newfoundlanders often refer to getting your picture taken. I remember the first time I heard it. At a wedding last summer, a friend made a comment when I was taking some pictures of the people at our table, "I 'ates gettin me snap took". Now remember, as Newfoundlanders do, she said it really quickly, so it was hard to understand! After I said "... What?!" she repeated herself and I clued in. Since then I've heard it many times.

Speaking of great photographers.. and Newfoundlanders - I loves goin out on little photo adventures with my friend, AMB. I hope we'll have lots of adventures together over the summer and that she'll show me some new spots on the island. AMB is a curious mind and loves to research random things that she learns. Check out her blog (which inspired me to start blogging again): www.internetrummage.blogspot.com It's seriously a great read with lots of interesting facts!!

Thanks for reading friends!
